When this L-shaped post office opened in 1915, letters arrived by sea, the building perched close enough to the waterfront that mail could reportedly be unloaded directly from ocean liners. Over a century of land reclamation has since pushed the shoreline well inland, leaving the former seaside structure landlocked on its original granite base. It was declared a monument in 1990, two years before it finished its 77-year run as a working post office in 1992, then became an environmental center in 1993, and most recently transformed into kNOw Carbon House in 2024, proof that the oldest surviving post office in Hong Kong delivers more than mail.

The building’s Chinese couplet still greets visitors at the entrance, a reminder that its purpose has shifted from postage to conservation without losing its bones. Where clerks once weighed parcels, guides now walk visitors through carbon footprints, with a mascot named Big Waster doing the talking. Wan Chai itself was once a cove, its name means exactly that, before a hundred years of reclamation erased the shoreline this building was built to serve.
