When Mohammad Reza Pahlavi fled Iran on January 16, 1979, he left behind more than a throne. Niavaran Palace remains frozen as it was that day, breakfast dishes, school records, even the crown prince’s music collection untouched. Built in 1967 with an aluminum retractable ceiling designed for stargazing, this modernist marvel was meant to host dignitaries but became the royal family’s intimate refuge. The palace that once required royal invitation now welcomes visitors for about a dollar, its interiors preserved in their original 1979 state.
The retractable roof was less a party trick than a design philosophy: strip away the wall between the imperial and the ordinary, then let the crown prince watch the stars from his own living room. Farah Pahlavi, trained as an architect, oversaw the interiors herself, mixing Achaemenid stonework with European furnishings in a way that reads now as a household caught mid-translation between two worlds. The Shah’s own family left thinking they might return. Instead, the palace became the only part of their lives that stayed exactly where they put it.
