The Kullu Valley earned its nickname from an ancient legend: a deity crossing Chandrakhani Pass opened a basket of gods, and a sudden breeze scattered over 300 deities across the villages below. For centuries, these gods traveled by palanquin, making decisions through oracles and even blocking a $350 million ski resort. Now hot air balloons drift above this divine real estate for seven minutes at 300 feet, a modern aerial pilgrimage over what locals still call the Valley of Gods.
The deities have not slowed down. Oracles still summon village assemblies to rule on new development, most recently against a ropeway project near a temple where the gods are said to bathe. The balloon operators, meanwhile, answer to weather and wind rather than palanquin bearers, but they occupy the same sky the gods have claimed since a storm first scattered them across these slopes. Below, the valley keeps doing what it has always done: consulting its gods before it lets anything new get built.
