Before bodybuilders turned Venice into a bicep paradise, the original Muscle Beach flexed its muscles in Santa Monica. Built in the early 1930s by the Works Progress Administration as a children’s playground, the stretch of sand just south of the Pier became a hangout for vaudeville acrobats and gymnasts who appreciated the soft landing. By the mid-1940s, it earned the nickname Muscle Beach and became the birthplace of America’s fitness boom. When the site was dismantled in 1959, Venice, which had quietly run its own Weight Pen since 1951, inherited the spotlight, and the rest is frequently misattributed history.

The closure wasn’t really about maintenance costs, despite what the city said at the time. A 1958 scandal involving several Muscle Beach regulars, including two Olympic weightlifters, gave Santa Monica the excuse it needed to shut the whole thing down for good. Venice had been building its own following for years by then, quietly, without the vaudeville pedigree or the WPA origin story, and simply absorbed the name once the original site went quiet.
