While dryers remain rare in Italian households, and clotheslines flutter from every balcony, self-service laundromats remain surprisingly scarce. The culprit? Italian washing machines heat water with internal coils rather than hot-water hookups, turning each cycle into a marathon that can stretch past two hours. This forces an odd intimacy: you can’t just drop and dash. You’re stuck there, becoming a temporary local, which is precisely how one traveler in Venice ended up discussing Spritz recipes and cruise ship damage with three separate groups of neighbors.

The habit runs deeper than convenience. Long before anyone plugged in a washing machine, Roman fullers were treading laundry in vats of urine at facilities called fullonicas, one of which turned up near the Vatican in 2024, still holding its rinsing basins after eighteen centuries underground. Somewhere between then and now, Italy decided that doing laundry quickly wasn’t worth what it cost: the conversation, the wait, the two hours you didn’t ask for but ended up glad to have.
