La Sorechina

In the Dolomites sits a German-speaking enclave where locals still converse in Plodarisch, a Tyrolean Bavarian dialect preserved since the 11th century. Sappada’s 15 hamlets cluster around chapels and fountains, their wooden houses built using blockbau, horizontal beams interlocked at corners, stables below, barns above. Borgata Kratten harbors one of the oldest: s’Gottn Paurn from 1634, and one of only two surviving kèisn, the characteristic cereal-drying racks that once dotted these alpine meadows.

The dialect traces back to settlers from the Puster Valley in East Tyrol, who arrived speaking a form of Middle High German and, isolated by the mountains, kept speaking it largely unchanged for a thousand years. Linguists still study it. Two neighboring valleys, Sauris and Timau, speak close cousins of it, though none of the three dialects is mutually intelligible with the German spoken just over the Austrian border today.

Every hamlet still has its own fountain and its own small church, a level of civic redundancy most Italian towns gave up centuries ago. Sappada never got the memo that villages are supposed to share!
