While Gliwice’s 1796 blast furnace made it Europe’s first city to smelt iron with coke, the real alchemy happened a century later when Prussian prosperity transformed medieval streets into showcases of architectural ambition. The tenement at Kościuszki 50 stands among the city’s most admired buildings, where Art Nouveau curves meet the rigid geometry of industrial wealth, a stone diary of the moment Upper Silesia’s factory smokestacks began to outnumber church spires.

Nobody recorded who designed it. The building went up in the early 1900s on the strength of Gliwice’s iron and coal fortunes, four stories and an attic dressed in geometric ornament and glazed cobalt brick, its balconies wrought in metal rather than stone because the city could suddenly afford both the material and the vanity. That anonymity is its own kind of record: a boom town didn’t need to remember the architect’s name when it had a hundred buildings just like this one going up at once. Most of that competition is gone now. Kościuszki 50 is still standing, unbothered, having outlasted both the empire that paid for it and the men who built it.
