Britain’s first coin-operated launderette opened in 1949 on Queensway, London, a radical notion that you could wash your own clothes in public. The concept sparked a social revolution: suddenly, the weekly wash became a communal affair, transforming what had been backbreaking domestic labor into an excuse to chat with neighbors. By the 1980s, these temples of tumble-dry had become fixtures of British high streets, their rhythmic hum as familiar as the chime of an ice cream van. This Hythe stalwart is said to have been spinning since 1987, outlasting video rental shops and phone boxes alike.

Britain had roughly 12,500 launderettes at that early-1980s peak. Today there are closer to 3,000, undone less by nostalgia than by the quiet spread of home washing machines and the disappearance of loose change from people’s pockets. What’s left behind tends to be the ones like this: the coin slots worn smooth, the paint gone patchy over years of steam, still doing on a Tuesday morning exactly what they did the week they opened.
