At 5,000 meters, an altitude where most gasp for oxygen and walking feels like sprinting, sits an active volleyball court. Perhaps the last thing a traveler wants to think about at this altitude is spiking a volleyball.
The highest volleyball court in the world rests on a former glacial lakebed in Gorakshep, the last settlement mountaineers pass on the trek to the base camp of Mount Everest. But the volleyball court isn’t there for visitors who hope to climb Mount Everest, but first want to get in a few digs and spikes.
Volleyball is the national sport of Nepal, first brought to the country by Nepalis serving in the British Army in the 1930s. Today it’s played everywhere from dense city courts to remote mountain villages. Oxygen might be scarce, but volleyball sure isn’t.
