Funkhaus Wien

When Austria’s Funkhaus opened in 1939, construction had begun under one regime and finished under another. Built during Austrofascism, it was completed just as the Nazis took over, opening as “Reichssender Wien” for propaganda broadcasts. The architects designed all major studios in trapezoid shapes, creating acoustically “uncomfortable” spaces that paradoxically produced perfect sound. After Allied bombs damaged it in 1945 and retreating SS troops destroyed its transmitter, the building was reportedly back on air within weeks in a limited capacity, ahead of a fuller relaunch later that year as the voice of Austria’s democratic rebirth.

The trapezoid studios were no accident: right angles trap sound in ways that flatter nothing, so the architects avoided them entirely, gambling that a room designed to be uncomfortable for sound would be the one where sound behaved best. It worked well enough that musicians still request the building’s Großer Sendesaal decades later. Vienna spent the Cold War treating the building as a nerve center of state media, then spent the years after treating it as a problem: too large, too expensive, too loaded with history to simply repurpose. The current plan calls it a “House of Dreams,” which is either an act of reinvention or the world’s most elaborate way of saying nobody wants to say the word “propaganda” twice in one brochure.
