Chaplins Bar Boscome

When Harry Seccombe bought his local pub in Boscombe, he couldn’t bear to see someone ‘rip the heart and soul out of it.’ So he enlisted pub regulars and his fiancée to transform the upstairs with salvaged church staircases and an ever-expanding kaleidoscope of Chaplin-inspired murals. The result: a venue that’s won Best Community Pub UK twice, most recently in 2025, hosts live music every single night, and helped secure a £23 million regeneration grant for the area.

The name and the murals are the full extent of the Chaplin connection. There’s no record the comedian ever set foot in Boscombe, silent or otherwise. Downstairs, the CAMRA-recognised Cellar Bar pours its own rums and has launched acts onto stages as far away as the O2 in Bournemouth, while Seccombe, a former local government reporter, sits on the community board overseeing that regeneration money. A seaside town borrowed a Hollywood tramp’s face for its pub sign and got, in exchange, rather less fiction and rather more infrastructure.
