In the 1860s, developers discovered a mineral spring near Boscombe’s clifftop and built a summerhouse over it, hoping to rival neighboring Bournemouth as a fashionable spa destination. It never quite got there. Fast-forward 140 years: the council spent £3.2 million on Europe’s first artificial surf reef, 55 giant sandbags designed to create perfect waves. It opened in 2009, closed for safety in 2011, and the New Zealand company behind it vanished into liquidation.

The reef didn’t stay idle for long. In 2014 the council rebranded it as a Coastal Activity Park, leaning into the one thing the failed surf experiment had accidentally achieved: two years of undisturbed seabed had drawn in enough marine life to make the spot worth diving and snorkeling. Boscombe Pier, meanwhile, never went anywhere. Renovated in 2008, it still juts out over the water a short walk from the reef, proof that the town’s Victorian ambitions and its twenty-first-century ones ended up telling the same story: never quite what it set out to be, and better for it anyway.
