Most people make the pilgrimage to Bibione’s Punta Tagliamento lighthouse for the 1913 tower itself, rebuilt after WWI bombing, electrified in 1952, still guiding sailors 15 miles out. But halfway there, a small wooden boat stands at attention like a sentry who forgot to lie down. No plaque. No explanation. Just a vessel that decided vertical was the new horizontal, as if auditioning for a role it never quite got. In winter, when the Adriatic turns moody and the tourists vanish, it looks less like art and more like the world’s most optimistic periscope.

The lighthouse, at least, has papers to explain itself: requisitioned by German troops in 1944, then by the British Army the following year, automated by 1973, its keeper’s house eventually restored into a small museum. The boat has none of that. It simply stands there, upright and unbothered, giving nothing away to the cyclists and dog walkers who pass it twice a day without ever quite deciding whether to stop and look closer.
