When Ireland’s Silver Swallows aerobatic team disbanded in 1998 after their beloved V-tailed Fouga Magisters were retired, it seemed permanent. Twenty-four years later, the team resurrected with new Pilatus PC-9M turboprops, volunteer flight instructors performing loops and opposing passes in their spare time. Their 2026 debut at Ayr marks a fitting pairing: Scotland’s only major airshow also rose from the dead in 2023 after a five-year hiatus plagued by funding disputes. Both came back stubbornly insisting the sky still needed them.

The symmetry runs deeper than timing. The Silver Swallows now fly out of the Irish Air Corps’ Flying Training School at Casement Aerodrome, the same unit responsible for teaching the next generation of Irish military pilots, meaning their aerobatics are, technically, a side project squeezed between actual instruction duties. Ayr’s own revival was similarly unglamorous: after the town’s airshow lapsed in 2018 and a proposed relocation to Kirkcaldy fell through, South Ayrshire Council spent years negotiating funding before rebranding the event entirely as the International Ayr Show, severing ties with the previous organizers rather than reviving them. Neither comeback involved much romance. Both involved spreadsheets, committee meetings, and someone eventually deciding the thing was worth doing again anyway. The result, this September, was two institutions that had each been quietly written off, occupying the same stretch of coastline, apparently under the impression that closure is a suggestion rather than a conclusion.
