On Valaam, an archipelago in Europe’s largest lake, monks traditionally progressed through three levels of spiritual life: the main monastery, then smaller sketes, and finally hermitage. Built in 1912 atop Mount Eleon, the Ascension Chapel sits at the highest symbolic rung, part of the Gethsemane Skete that recreates Jerusalem’s sacred geography in the Russian North. A path carved through rock leads pilgrims up to this turquoise-domed chapel, where one observation window frames Nikonovskaja Bay below.

The Soviet Union spent decades trying to erase all of it. When the archipelago became a military base and the monks fled to Finland with what relics they could carry, Valaam sat empty of its purpose for nearly fifty years. Monastic life returned only in 1989, and pilgrims once again began climbing the rock path to Gethsemane, tracing a route laid out by men trying to build Jerusalem out of granite and northern light.
