From the CommunityWhen AIDAblu launched in 2010, it became the first cruise ship with a working brewery, a fitting tribute to its German heritage. The cruise line itself traces back to 1960s East Germany, when the state-owned Deutsche Seereederei purchased a Swedish liner and turned it into a ‘holidaymaker ship’ for well-deserved socialists.
Today, AIDAblu brews three types of beer using desalinated seawater, storing them in copper tanks below deck. In 2011, the ship set the record for fastest English Channel crossing by a cruise ship, 6 hours and 45 minutes, Le Havre to Southampton. Somewhere, a shift supervisor decided a floating brewery made more sense than a floating casino. History has yet to argue with him.
